Fidget spinner is a distracting toy, interesting from biochemical, psychological and sociological perspective. And no, I didn’t teach my dog how to spin a spinner using her claws. Though it’s fun to think about it (dog amused by spinning mechanism), I can’t even imagine teaching my clumsy dog (Buba) all the skills of human entertainment.
What is so special about it? Is it watching it spins? Holding it while it’s stopping? Or maybe both? Ok, I’m not going to dip into debate about existence of relaxing side effects. Let’s just say there are, since we can find similar impact on our nervous system in even more common everyday habits if we want to – turning on and off a light switch, spraying water with garden hose, door shutting, you name it … You can spin your keys around the pencil, reaching for the same effect of mild ecstasy caused by activation of the frontal lobe of the brain, urging the center in the limbic system (amygdala) involved in the experience of fear and parts of the thalamus, involved in physical regulation of the body. This makes sense since relaxation can only occur when the emotion of fear is reduced, and is associated with specific events in the physical body such as the reduction of blood pressure, reduced activation of muscles, decreased heart rate.
If you doubt in relaxation response triggered by fidget spinner please try the following; lie down in bed with a spinner in your hand, spin it hard and put it on your index finger while still spinning strongly. Then slowly lift it up with your forefinger and imagine that what you see is alien spacecraft lifting off.
How is it possible that this little (w/F)idget gained such importance in our everyday life? I’m noticing a sudden increase in number of those devices at my home, I watch children handling them, salesman giving their customers spinners instead of discounts on articles that aren’t even remotely connected with kids anymore. What is going on? I still remember one successful Japanese spinning product (though it started as a comic); Beyblades (Let it rip!), they all have those majestic creatures waiting to be awaken by the spin, there is also the cartoon. The whole merchandise (along with franchises) has a very efficient market strategy – it was (and for some still is) a must have, at least for all the boys in my primary school. In my time, all kids watching cartoon later played in groups, comparing the strength and endurance of their Beyblades.
Fidget spinner isn’t about socializing and spending time together playing. It also doesn’t offer escape from reality with some imaginative colored creatures creeping out of a toy. It just spins until it stops spinning in your hand. It’s more of a relaxation tool than a toy, which means it’s not targeted on certain age group. Maybe this is the story of its success. Keep bigger kids busy and the little ones will follow their agenda.
